Selecting a future career is a difficult decision for students. In order to support Qatar’s growing student population and give advice on the multiple careers available in the construction sector for men and women; Quantum Global Solutions (QGS) recently took part in a careers workshop for Year 12 Business Studies students at Park House English School, providing insight into the practical implications of the course syllabus. The workshop was conducted by Ian Maund, QGS’s Associate Director and Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Building, Qatar Centre. For this event he was accompanied by Paul Etherton, General Manager from Doha based company Inspectorate.
The workshop provided an interactive forum for the students to discuss subjects such as business strategy, management techniques and personal management styles, communication theory and practice; as well as opportunities and external factors affecting businesses operating here in Qatar. The students engaged enthusiastically and raised various insightful questions on practical business matters. The event was a great success with plans for further visits to Park House English School again later in the year.
Speaking after the event Maund said, “Schools in Doha continue to produce fantastic students every year and continue to raise the international educational standards. It is a pleasure to be leading QGS’s Careers Outreach Programme and to have the opportunity to share some of my own experiences with these bright sparks. The students were very interested to learn more about the actual application of a variety of theories and I have no doubt that we are dealing with business leaders of the future. QGS is proud to be part of local career fairs and educational initiatives to support Qatar’s next generation of construction industry professionals”.
In addition, Lyvica Allan, Business Studies teacher and organiser of the workshop stated, “Ian and Paul’s ability to communicate the reality of how businesses operate on a day to day basis was exceptionally effectual. They had taken the time to link their talking points to the syllabus for the course the students are studying. The students were engaged throughout and were able to reflect on the theory they have been taught and make tangible connections. The visit was an immense success and ended up being perfectly timed, due to the proximity of the external exams and we look forward to either, both or representatives visiting again in the future. It is always fantastic to have a different face reinforcing the work you are trying to do in school to help the students make a more informed choice and make your subject come to life. My sincere gratitude to them both”.
The next step in the QGS Careers Outreach Programme will be the provision of work experience placements for students looking to gain further experience in the workplace. This event is part of QGS’s on-going programme which will continue to support a number of schools in Doha.
