Qatar awards billions in Private sector contracts for 2017

Doha: Qatar plans to award contracts worth $29bn to the private sector in order to encourage diversification and focus on supporting food security projects, small and medium enterprises, and the development of infrastructure in economic zones and free trade zones, QNA reported yesterday. The Qatari economy has started the New Year with optimistic plans to develop agricultural production to meet the needs of the local market and achieving self-sufficiency in agricultural and livestock products through the Qatar national food security programme and the comprehensive food security plan for the period 2014-2024. Ian Maund presents at FIDIC Claims Workshop

Ian Maund, Quantum Regional Director UAE has been confirmed as a speaker at the upcoming two-day FIDIC Claims Workshop: ‘FIDIC Claims – Managing, Defending and Making Claims under FIDIC Contracts’. With over 20 years of construction industry experience working on high-profile, multi-million dollar projects Ian will share some of his knowledge during two workshops: Day 1 – Critical Path Analysis – An alternative means of demonstrating or disproving entitlement and forensic delay analysis in action. Day 2 – Quantifying and analysing claims for payment – Cost or value, profits, disruption and global claims. The workshop has been designed by FIDIC in partnership with Cornerstone Seminars to provide a detailed insight into the presentation and analysis of claims under the FIDIC 1999 Contracts.  The programme has been designed to be highly practical and includes active participation in ‘hands-on’ workshops and discussion sessions. The course programme with also include some useful insight and reference to the latest 2017 revision of the FIDIC contracts. The workshop will include key note industry experts Edward Corbett, Managing Director of Corbett & Co, International Construction Lawyers Ltd and Professor Dr Nael G. Bunni, Visiting Professor at Trinity College, Dublin. The workshops will take place in Dubai on the 18th and 19th of December 2017. As part of Quantum’s Asian Lecture Series, Tom Kapapa, Operations Director and Steven Beaumont, Regional Director Asia, made a series of presentations in Tokyo, Japan and Hanoi, Vietnam to members of the Overseas Construction Association of Japan Inc (OCAJI) on “How to win claims under FIDIC, and Dispute Adjudication Boards – the answer to successful claims.” The presentation, provided the OCAJI members attending with an in-depth overview of why claims are necessary and the key ingredients to a success claim. In addition, further topics discussed included payments, the difficulties with Concurrency and Arbitration. Both presentations concluded with a lively question and answer sessions focusing on key aspects of the construction industry affecting Japanese contractors working overseas. Speaking following the event Beaumont and Kapapa stated, ‘’Recent reports have highlighted that aligned to the country’s 2020 Vision the Japanese construction industry is projected to grow at a rate of 1.2 percent annually through 2019. Civil engineering works continue to drive growth showing a slightly higher rate of expansion than the buildings industry as the country develops road, rail and airport facilities. The upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games infrastructure and commercial projects will be a source of additional growth.
